How we score

VPN Finder doesn’t run its own test lab. Every score on the site is based on independent tests from 2025 and 2026 and on published security audits. This page explains what we look at, how the numbers are put together and how the list is ordered.

What we score

Each VPN gets a score from 0 to 10, with one decimal, in six areas.

AreaWhat we look at
SpeedHow much of your normal connection speed is kept with the VPN on, on nearby and long-distance servers.
StreamingWhether Netflix in several countries, Disney+, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer and Max worked in tests, and how often a server had to be switched.
PrivacyWhere the company is based, independent no-logs audits, RAM-only servers, open-source apps, server seizures or court cases where no logs were found, and past security incidents.
TravelHow many countries have servers, obfuscation features, and whether the VPN worked in countries that restrict VPN use, such as China.
TorrentingWhether P2P is allowed on all servers, port forwarding, and whether the kill switch held up in tests.
ValuePrice per month on the longest plan, the renewal price, how many devices are included, the money-back guarantee and any free plan.

How the score out of 10 is calculated

The score shown on each VPN is the average of the six area scores. When you pick what you need a VPN for on the front page, for example streaming and travel, the score becomes the average of only those areas, and the list is ranked by that score instead.

How the list is ordered

When no use case is picked, the list is ordered by each VPN’s Trustpilot rating, as published on Trustpilot. If two VPNs have the same rating, the one with the higher score out of 10 comes first. Trustpilot ratings reflect user opinions and are not part of our score. The date we last checked them is shown under the list.

Where the information comes from

  • Hands-on reviews and speed tests published by independent technology media and VPN testers.
  • Published no-logs and security audits by independent auditing firms.
  • Public records of server seizures and court cases.
  • The providers’ own websites, only for plain facts such as prices, plans, number of devices and server countries.
  • Trustpilot, for user ratings.

We use the most recent tests we can find. When testers disagree, we give more weight to the newest results and to results that several testers agree on.

How often we update

Prices and offers change often, so always check the provider’s site for the current deal. Scores are reviewed when new independent tests or audits are published. Last full update: November 2026.
