Our verdict

Private Internet Access (PIA) is our top pick for torrenting and has our highest value score. Its no-logs policy has held up in court, and the apps are open source. Speeds on long-distance servers varied a lot in tests, and the company is based in the US.

Speed

Results varied between tests. One test measured only about 5% loss in download speed, while another measured an average loss of 48%, with big differences between nearby and long-distance servers.

Streaming

Netflix worked in 10 countries, and BBC iPlayer, Max and Amazon Prime Video UK worked too, mostly on PIA’s dedicated streaming servers. Some services failed in tests, including Hulu and some UK servers.

Privacy and security

PIA is based in the US and has been owned by Kape since 2019. Its apps are open source, and all servers run on RAM only. Its no-logs policy has been tested in court twice, in 2016 and 2018, when no logs could be handed over, and an independent auditing firm completed its third no-logs audit in December 2025.

Travel

PIA has servers in more than 90 countries. Obfuscation is available, but only with the OpenVPN protocol, and it is not guaranteed to work in China.

Torrenting

P2P is allowed on all servers, port forwarding is available, and both the standard and advanced kill switches worked in tests.

Price and plans

PIA starts at $2.03 a month on its longest plan, covers unlimited devices and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. There is no free plan.

  • Unlimited devices at a low price
  • No-logs policy proven in court
